Turnovers proved to be costly for Kansas Wesleyan as they dropped their homecoming game to Ottawa 14-7. Wesleyan turned the ball over four times, twice on the goal line. The Coyotes dominated every other statistical category. Wesleyan put up 322 total yards on Ottawa with 199 yards on the ground and 123 through the air.
The first half of the game was strictly defense as the score was tied up 0-0 at half time.
The Coyotes were able to hold on to the ball with their fist possession of the second half as the marched down the field 60 yards in 10 plays. Quarterback Drew Dallas faked the ball to running back Preston McCorkle, and took it into the end zone himself from three yards out.
Ottawa responded by going to the air. They went down the field 80 yards on 6 plays and scored on a 40-yard touchdown reception by Ottawa's Chris Simms. This knotted the score up 7-7 in the third quarter.
Wesleyan got the ball back and moved down the field into Ottawa territory. The drive stalled when Dallas looked for Jason Dolan deep and hung the ball in the air. Ottawa cornerback Earl Moorning picked off the pass at the Brave one-yard line.
Both teams then traded possessions without any results. Ottawa got great field position when Wesleyan's Scotty McKeon punted the ball seven yards and set up Ottawa on KWU's 42-yard line. It only took Ottawa two plays to get into the end zone and take the lead with 9:20 left in the fourth.
The Coyotes had a chance to tie the game toward the end. Dallas tried for the end zone four straight times from the Ottawa 14-yard line, but could not connect. The best chance came with a high toss to Marcus Lowe, but was not completed.
The Coyotes look to regroup for tomorrow and are scheduled to play the Spires of Saint Mary's College at 1 p.m. in Leavenworth.
