Michael Kenyon, a football player at Kansas Wesleyan has had his truck out of commission for the past several weeks because of a vicious attack on his car from a pothole. The result is a broken axle, and somewhere between 400 - 700 dollars to repair.
Tyler Little, a soccer player at Kansas Wesleyan hit one of these potholes and ended up with a leak from his radiator which caused his car to overheat. This was a 200 dollar expense that college students really can't afford to pay. Its one thing if the school offered to help these students pay to get their car back on the road. This however, is not the case, Michael Kenyon's car is still parked in the last parking spot on campus and Tyler Little had to get money from another source in order to keep his driving privileges.
Meanwhile, students that live in Wesley, Wilson, or Pfeiffer halls are tired of trying to find a parking space in their assigned parking lots and the parking lot conditions here on campus.
"I sometimes have to park a block or two away to get a parking space, and I'm tired of it!" said freshman Stetson Smith.
Parking is becoming a big issue for many students. If they live in Wesley or Wilson Hall they have the one parking lot space or the side streets to use; however, that space is quickly becoming a problem. With the increase in students this year it is harder to find a space.
Most students have to park in either side streets blocks away or in the Pioneer Hall parking lot. Not only do the students that live in Wesley or Wilson hall have to worry about the lack of parking space, but there are many potholes to worry about. Many of the potholes are ankle deep and very wide. The campus is compensating him now.
The Pfeiffer Hall parking lot holds only 30 cars, and there are a minimum of 15 girls on one wing of a floor. Most of the girls in Pfeiffer elect to park either on the side streets, near the apartments for the married students or in Pioneer Hall.
"It's literally hell trying to get a parking space in Pfeiffer. I think I have only gotten a parking space in two this year so far," freshman Precious Ford said.
The students want something to be done about the problems. They all have their own ideas of what the campus should do. Some think that they should add more parking lots, block off streets, or make the Pioneer Hall parking lot bigger, expanding into the grass areas. Students all agree on one thing though. They potholes need to be fixed before other cars get damaged.
