Kansas Wesleyan faced Morningside College in the second game of its weekend doubleheader. After having the start of the matches pushed back just over two hours because the officials were incorrectly notified of the start times, Morningside struck first in the 16th minute of the women's game as they knocked off the Coyotes 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at Martin Stadium.
Brooke Niles took a ball and dribbled up the left side and shot from about 15 yards out past Wesleyan keeper Kelly Balch for the score.
Wesleyan had plenty of chances in the first half for a score, as Salina Central product Heather Muilenberg penetrated the Mustang defense several times but was unable to score. It was, however, Muilenberg who set up the Wesleyan goal in the 44th minute. She took a pass from the center and dribbled down the line on the left side, and sidestepped a defender and fired at Morningside keeper Kelly Burst. Burst's save then deflected off Emma Prosser's leg for an own goal.
Morningside jumped ahead in the 66th minute as Maggie Kukuk's corner kick went over Balch's head at the opposite post and in.
The loss drops Wesleyan to 5-2-1 overall and breaks their six match unbeaten streak. The Wesleyan men extended their winning streak to four matches as they cruised past Morningside 4-1.
Steve Gloria got Wesleyan on the board first with a goal in the fourth minute of play. Morningside then evened things up in the eighth minute as Hogan Cemper scored.
The Coyotes (6-2) then posted three unanswered goals to blow the game open. Abe Moran played a rebound of a shot from Mike Padilla past Morningside's Brian Schekirke.
Morningside then gave the Coyotes a little help as a pass back to Schekirke missed and went in for an own goal in the 65th minute.
Tyler Little capped the scoring in the 73rd minute as he took a save deflection on the left side dribbled in and curved a ball around the keeper at the right post for the score.
Wesleyan is next in action on Saturday against Bethel College beginning with the women at 10:00 AM as part of Homecoming 2006. The men will follow at approximately 12:00 p.m.
