Where can you find comedy, drama, musicals, history, and horror? All of these will be present in the fall theatre season here in Salina. The Salina Community Theatre, Kansas Wesleyan Theatre, Salina Central High School Theatre, and the Salina South High School Theatre all have major productions scheduled in the next few months.
The Salina Community Theatre was created in 1973 and has been operating ever since. They are continually putting on plays and musicals for the community. This fall there are four shows being performed though that appeal to multiple age ranges. Currently showing is The Wizard of Oz which will end on October 1. Next up is Tuck Everlasting, a Salina Theatre for Young People production based on the children's book, performing October 12-14. A romantic comedy, Here in the Flight Path, will be performing shortly after opening on October 27. For the Christmas show this year the Salina Community Theatre will be putting on the musical Annie December 1-10.
Salina High School's Central and South have two productions this fall as well. Salina Central is putting on the comedy, Arsenic and Old Lace, a play about a couple of old sisters who poison people. This production will be October 12-14. At Salina South they are putting on a production of the musical 1776 about the American Revolution. The musical will be performed at South High on October 5-7.
Then at Kansas Wesleyan University there will be the horror play, The Haunting of Hill House opening on October 19. The play is about a house that is believed to be haunted and a group of people who agree to stay in it. It is definitely going to have its spooky moments, and it is always nice to go support your Kansas Wesleyan Theatre.
Michael Spicer, Executive Director at the Salina Community Theatre, says that "Live theatre is an incredibly important part of any student's process. Just as we hope that you support Kansas Wesleyan Theatre, we hope you support the local arts scene as well. In many instances there are students in our productions, The Wizard of Oz has 8 or 9."
There are entertainment options in Salina that go beyond a trip to the mall theaters or a visit to the rental stores for DVD's. Live theater provides a great change of pace, and you would be supporting the thriving art scene in Salina.
