KWU forced 29 Southwestern turnovers, and turned them into 41 points, as the Coyotes routed the defending KCAC Champion Southwestern Moundbuilders 79-54 on Saturday night at Muir Gym.
Wesleyan jumped out to a 4-0 lead with 17:53 to go on a layup by Trey Sims, before Rodney Jackson hit a three for Southwestern to get them within one at 4-3. Marcus Faubion would then hit one of two free throws to put Wesleyan up two before Prince Ezeala hit a bucket to tie things up at 5-all with 15:24 to go in the first half.
The score was tied up again at 12-all when the Coyotes went on an 11-3 run to take an eight point, 23-15 lead with 7:21 left on a three-point play by Josh Berry. Southwestern cut the Coyote lead to three, 23-20 with 5:29 left, but a Trey Sims three would ignite a 10-1 Wesleyan run to end the first half, as the Coyotes took a 36-24 lead into the halftime break.
The Coyotes extended their lead to 15 on an Anthony Smith free throw, but Southwestern got back within nine points, at 41-32, with 16:41 left on a three-point play by Cedrick Riley. That was as close as the Moundbuilders got the rest of the game.
Wesleyan blew things wide open with a 14-0 run capped by a pair of Sims free throws with 13:02 left, giving the Coyotes a 55-32 lead. Ezeala got the 'Builders back within 20 on a putback, but the Coyotes use a 17-6 run to pull out to a 31-point lead at 71-43, with 5:11 to go on a layup by Faubion.
Both teams then turned to the bench to play out the game as the Coyotes came away with the 25-point win, 79-54.
Wesleyan (7-2, 1-0) was led in scoring by Smith with 21, while Faubion added 14 and Sims had 13 for the Coyotes, who shot 30-of-64 from the field for 46.9 percent. Jeff Baron led the Coyotes with six rebounds, and Faubion added five. The Coyotes shot a much improved 11-of-14 from the free throw line for 78.6 percent, compared to their season average of just 57 percent. Sims had four assists to lead the Coyotes. Wesleyan only committed nine turnovers as a team.
Southwestern (6-2, 0-1) was led by Jackson's 13 points, while Ezeala added 12. Southwestern shot 39.6 percent from the field in 19-of-46 shooting. Riley led the 'Builders with nine rebounds, while Ezeala had eight and Jackson seven as Southwestern won the rebounding battle 41-27.
The Coyotes head to Wichita to take on Friends on Saturday.
