The Kansas Wesleyan University Track and Field team kicked off their season on Saturday, January 27th at the Charlie Foster Indoor Invitational in Kearney Nebraska.
The Coyotes were among nine teams competing in the Cushing Fieldhouse on the campus of the University of Nebraska at Kearney on a 160-meter track. Among those other nine teams were Ft. Hays State University, and fellow KCAC conference teams Sterling College and rival Bethany College.
Despite the team's inexperience on an indoor track, the coyotes still competed well at the meet. Leading the way for the ladies was Kara Walker, who competed in the 600-yard run and won her heat in a time of 1 minute, 37.44 seconds. Walker placed eighth overall out of 19 competitors. Also leading the way for the lady coyotes was Sarah Williams, who placed fourth overall in the 2-mile run with a time of 12:25.03.
On the guy's side, it was Mark Winkel leading the way by placing second in his preliminary heat of the 55-meter dash and qualifying for finals with a time of 6.71 seconds. Winkel was also scheduled to compete in the 200-meter dash, however withdrew from the event due to a hamstring injury suffered in the finals of the 55-meter race.
The Coyotes next meet will be held on Saturday, February 3rd at Highland Community College in Highland Kansas.
