The new gym will sit across from Memorial Library along Claflin Ave., and will stand alongside the old Muir gym, which is to remain standing after completion of the building project.
The existence of the elevating hype is mainly due to the success of the men's basketball team throughout the 2006-2007 seasons. The champions look to continue their success in a new facility. The Coyotes completed the season with a 17-1 conference regular season record, capturing both regular season and tournament championships; KWU's first ever in school history.
The Coyotes anticipate many memorable moments in the new gym, just as they experienced in the Muir Gym. Such memories include previous KWU head basketball coach Jerry Jones's memorable farewell speech on Feb. 18 of last year, ending a 17-year tenure as head coach of the Coyotes. Another special moment was the buzzer beater from Trey Sims to defeat the Friends Falcons on Feb. 27 of this year that captured the KCAC conference tournament championship.
In addition to the men's team, the women's basketball team also had a memorable season, defeating the Spires of the University of Saint Mary in the first round of the women's KCAC tournament and setting new school records in the process throughout the season.
The new gym is set to be completed by the start of the Spring Semester and will be the new home to Wesleyan athletics for years to come. The new gym, along with the student life building, will also be a main attraction for the Wesleyan community and will also draw in prospective students. Muir gym will remain standing, along with the old memories that have developed throughout the years.
