Summer of sequels dazzles, disappoints

Michael Tate

Issue date: 8/31/07 Section: Entertainment
Pirates of the Caribbean III
Jenna: Of all of the "three-quel" movies that came out this summer, I have to admit that I was most excited for this one. The final chapter in the Jack, Will, and Elizabeth story is one of action, intrigue, mystery, deceit, and a most interesting twist at the end. I will not spoil the ending just in case you still have not seen it, but I will say that the it is more than memorable!
Michael: Two words: Jack. Sparrow. It is a good thing that they rescue the guy, because that character is pretty much the one who makes the whole movie. Talent draws me to the theater, and Johnny Depp's got it. The story is worthwhile, but Depp's takes a great movie and morphs it into a must-see.
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
Jenna: As one of the original Harry Potter fans, I have to admit that I was more than ready to see Harry on the big screen once more. Obviously, the plot was incredible and the actors delivered J.K. Rowling's words amazingly. I just wish that there had been a "fan's cut" - a version of the movie that was 3 to 4 hours long, that way even the hardcore fan could get a full dose of Harry.
Michael:
Evan Almighty
Jenna: Steve Carell shocked audiences as the 40-year-old virgin, but this role was completely different - Noah. It was interesting to see his character's struggle between doing what he thought was right for his family and what God had planned. Michael and I both enjoyed this "remake" of the story of the arc, but neither of us could understand why all of the animals had to get on the arc. Maybe that's saying too much - but you will just have to buy or rent the DVD to see what I mean.
Transformers
Jenna: Director Michael Bay created a gem with this remake of an old action-figure squad. Of course, the special effects were amazing. This is what everyone expects from this movie. There was a somewhat worthy plot, and a capable male lead. My only word of advice is to not watch this movie with high expectations as far as the script. It almost seemed like a 10-year old boy's day dream put on the big screen - hot girl; boy gets a car; plenty of action…and a cheesy script.
Michael: The 12-year-old boy in me loved the constant action. Everything in this movie seems to be about big military guns and machines fighting each other, and I love it! Of course, the 21-year-old in me had to hold back laughter from the first line of the movie on, but hey, if I can still enjoy it, so much the better. This movie made me happy.
