Shrek III
Jenna:
Shrek has always captivated audiences with his gruff humor, clever wordplay, and witty social references. Shrek III was no different! With an all-star voice cast to round out the amazing graphics and "fun-for-all-the-family" plot, it contained all the usual Shrek-charms! We just wish that it had not been advertised so heavily, as we both thought that we had seen way too much of the movie through commercials.
Michael: I relish watching Shrek movies for the voice talent behind the animation. It is the work of Eddie Murphy, Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, Antonio Banderas, John Cleese, and others that makes these movies appealing. They make the jokes come alive, and put personality behind the animation. Shrek III follows in the mold, and does so with brilliance. I hope that, if I wait a while to watch the movie again, I will be able to appreciate originality in the movie, because this is definitely another great flick.
Spiderman III
Jenna:
As with the majority of the Marvel-comic-turned-cinema features films, this movie offered an action-filled plotline with amazing graphics to match. The villains were not just inherently evil, and this helped give the story dimension. Venom had the most frightening snarl that I think that I have ever seen! The only flaw of this movie was the length. At over 2-and-a-half hours, I felt that the movie was far too long for my viewing pleasure.
Michael: I was looking for action movies this summer, movies with fantasy-quality special effects that had a plethora of fight scenes. Spiderman III achieves the balance between constant fighting and a lack thereof (see Fantastic 4). The story comes to an effective conclusion. And, we were still reminded that "great power comes with great responsibility."
Fantastic 4
Michael: This was not the quality of movie that I had expected to see. Of course, Mr. Fantastic and company had plenty to offer in terms of quick quips and comical use of powers, and the dialogue was not overly dorky or predictable, but I felt like I did not get to see enough action. I wanted more dazzling effects, but I suppose that the effects emphasis for this movie was directed towards the subtle, everyday stuff that the Fantastic Four performed. The movie is still worth seeing, but more of a "rent-it" than a "buy-it."
