New organizations this year include men's and woman's Campus Crusade for Christ group as well as "The Connection." While plans for the Campus Crusade for Christ groups are still underway, "The Con¬nection" plans to meet Monday nights at 9:00 pm. This group is your typical dorm room bible study organization, as compared to "The Calling" which enhances devotions, meditation, games, and chapel.
Not all of the Christian organizations on campus, however, are new. "The Calling" is currently in its third year and remains very successful. Reverend Blackwell, dean of the chapel at KWU, stated that the original concept for "The Calling" came to him after his first year with the university. He stated that he felt the need for a chapel and fellowship. He decided that they could have both and embrace the opportunity to "take time to relax and let your hair down".
"The Calling" recently changed its meeting day to Thurs¬day nights at 9:00 pm in the Student Center located on the bottom floor of Pioneer Hall. Every week, the number of students ranges from ap¬proximately 10-25, depending on the students' schedules. Newcomers are always welcome.
Some of the fun activities in which "The Calling" participates and organizes every year include games between the various sports. Last year the women's soccer team took on the football players in a game of soccer. The women were victorious. This year the softball team plan on taking on the baseball team. Athletics often get involved directly with the chapel service itself. Last year the basketball team sang a dedication at the Martin Luther King Jr. service. There are such possible activities in the works for this year.
Students are also encour¬aged to attend church service at the University United Methodist Church across the street from Pioneer Hall and Wesley Hall located at the corner of Santa Fe and Claflin. Services are at 10:30 AM Sundays. Throughout the year there is expected to be more services held in Sam's chapel.
Notes: Students who have prayer intentions can contact Rev. Blackwell and he will send word throughout campus via e-mail. If you wish to remain anonymous your requests can still be accommodated.
Mary and Marion Woods, distinguish award winner last year, are planning a mission trip to Costa Rica. There will be more information to come on this event during the year.
Anderson DuGazon stated that he attends the calling every week because it, "Helps connect with God." The first meeting this year kicked off with prayer and meditation music, inspirational words from DuGazon and Rev. Blackwell followed by a fun filled get-to-know-you game of "Loaded Questions". Most meetings are in the same fashion.
