A Kansas Wesleyan University student was involved in a car accident on his way to Wichita on Aug. 17.
The crash occurred Friday afternoon when Robert Nelson was on his way to the Wichita Mid-Continent Airport to pick up a KWU student. Noticing that he had only a half tank of gas, Nelson decided to turn off his air-conditioning to conserve fuel. Soon after, he blacked out. He reportedly began swerving for about three miles and crashed into a concrete barrier along side the Interstate 135S. After the wreck, Nelson was transported to Via Christi St. Francis Hospital in Wichita where he underwent surgery on his right ankle and medical attention on three fractured ribs.
"All I remember before I crashed was that I was really tired, and I blacked out." Nelson said. He wants to advise to everyone: "If you ever get tired, you know how far you can push your body. Don't push yourself past what your body can do."
Earlier that Friday, Nelson had been helping students move in their dorm rooms in the hot and humid Kansas weather. He said he also missed a lot of rest earlier in the week. Nelson then was asked, as a second-year KWU student football coach, to go pick up a new student from the Wichita Mid-Continent Airport. He said he left KWU before he could think about how physically prepared he really was for this trip.
Kansas Wesleyan University staff and students prayed for Nelson's health and for a safe recovery. He is back at KWU where he will recover from his injuries and will continue to pursue his education as soon as possible. He also will make it out to the KWU football games to support his teammates and resume his role as a KWU student football coach, he said.
