The Coyote Cross Country team ran its first meet of the 2007 season this past Friday, September 9th at the Friends Night Invite hosted by Friends University.

The meet was located at Afton Lake in Goddard, Kan. and featured 11 teams from the NAIA Kansas Conference, NCAA division I and II teams, but despite the competition and the tough course, the 'running yotes' had a great showing to kick of the season with the women placing third overall, behind Cowley College and Big XII conference team Oklahoma State from NCAA Div. I.

Leading the way for the women was Jolene Mick, who for the second year in a row was victorious in a field of 91 runners in the women's 5k (3.1 miles), running a time of 19 minutes, 18.19 seconds.

"It feels really good to win a meet two years in a row," quoted Mick on her run on Friday. "I think we have a lot to look forward to this season and we can really build off of this," stated Mick. Following Mick was Sarah Williams, senior from Lucerne Valley, Calif. placing sixth overall with a time of 20:15.83. Both medaled and placed at the meet

First year head coach Jeff Barker could not be happier with the way his team ran at the meet. "I think we did a really great job." Barker stated. "We done a really great job of staying healthy, which is my number one concern and the more consistent we are, the better we are going to become." The lady coyotes placed first among other KCAC teams.

The coyote men also had a great showing at the meet, despite being one man short of scoring at the meet. For the men, it was Mark Winkel crossing the line first, placing 45th overall in a field of 111 runners. Winkel crossed at a time of 29:54.43
in the men's 8k (5 miles). The rest were not far behind as Gabe Russell, Paul Minneman and Seth Schooley came in shortly afterwards, placing 56, 58 and 59th respectively.

"I was really please with how the guys ran," stated Barker about the men. "They all ran together and consistently throughout the meet and if we can get five guys to run under 30 by conference, we can do really well at the conference meet."

The running yotes will compete next Saturday morning, September 22 at Marion Lake at the Tabor Invite, hosted by Tabor College.
