Church for Buck Meal.
Buck meal is an out-reach program
that is run by individuals elected yearly. An overseer is then chosen each week to run the weekly meal which begins at 6:00 p.m.
Dr. Gene Bissell, former KWU football coach and athletic director, has been involved with Buck Meal for over 15 years and stated that one of its main goals is to feed college students on Sunday and bring them closer to the Lord.
The service is funded by donations from college students who attend and from collections that take place during
church services.
The person in charge of the current week's meal decides on the entrees and side dishes that will be served.
Typical selections for food vary from hamburgers, hot dogs, pasta with salad, and even peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
"We feed about 60 to 80 people and would love to have more," stated Bissell. Some Super Bowl Sundays, the program delivers pizzas to the dorms for the students to eat while they enjoy the game.
Included on "Buck Night" is the option for students to get some desert.
Helen Maupin and Helen Gilmore, Buck meal volunteers who have been involved for over 15 years also, are people to whome Bissell and some students refer as "Cake Ladies."
They serve a variety of not only cakes, but also brownies, and cookies
along with a side serving of ice cream. "Buck Meal is a great opportunity
for me to meet the kids," said Gilmore.
"I absolutely love Buck Meal, and if anyone needs a hug I'll give it to them," Maupin added.
