Two weeks of hard work and training finally paid off for Kansas Wesleyan's cross country teams this past weekend at the Tabor Invitational,
located at the Marion Reservoir in Hillsboro.

This meet featured two athletes returning to run their first meet of the season after rehabilitating from previous
long injuries. Ashley Toews, junior from Whitewater, Kan., completed
the women's 5K in 22 minutes, 53.86 seconds, and Tyler Jensen, sophomore from Ellsworth, Kan. who competed in the men's 8K, but did not finish the race.

"I think with the workouts and the mileage that I've been doing, I think I did just fine," stated Toews on her run on Saturday. Toews then stated, "Getting back out there felt great for me, and I actually felt like a runner again."

Head coach Jeff Barker definitely has noticed signs of improvement for Toews and Jensen. "It's good to have them back in the picture," stated Barker. "I think we are a ways away before they're going to be where they need to be, but five weeks from now it could be a different story for them where they can be in a position to help their team out."

Overall, the lady coyotes placed second in the team scoring following Johnson County Comm. College who won the meet. The ladies also placed 4 individual runners in the top 20, placing Kara Walker, Yeleny Torres, Sarah Williams, and Jolene Mick, who won the race. Although the men's team did not score, only having three runners finish the 8K and needing five to place, the men produced meet, season and overall personal bests at the meet.

"Collectively as a group, everyone is getting better and the training is getting better," stated Barker. "Everyone's
body is adapting and gradually getting better which is a positive."

With only two meets remaining before the KCAC conference meet, the season is quickly winding down for the 'Running Yotes'. The cross country teams will next compete at the Emporia State Jock's Nitch invite in Emporia on Friday night, September
28th.
