With the purchase of the former Peggy Simms Dance Studio one month ago, the Salina Public Library has been busy preparing the newly acquired building.
The new space, to be named the Community Learning Center, will headquarter the Library's Community Learning and Skill Sharing or CLASS program. CLASS offers general learning classes for adults and teens age 16 and up.
Public Relations director, Bret Wallace said the purpose of the CLASS program, as well as the general motto is for "lifelong learning."
"Community outreach is the goal of the CLASS program and we are extremely excited to have this new addition" said Wallace.
Classes were previously held in rooms available throughout the library and in the Technology Center.
The library also used Crestwood Inc. cabinet company and Lakewood Middle School in Salina for cooking-related classes. Some classes will still be in the Technology Center, but the Community Learning Center will host the majority of classes in the future. Wallace will be moving his office into the building along with CLASS Coordinator Lisa Petty.
Petty reinforced the program's motto of the center in the library's most recent newsletter, "Cover to Cover," saying the new library acquisition will be an "exciting lifelong learning and cultural center."
Wallace said the library hopes to have the transition complete by the end of the year and that classes will officially open for use in the spring semester on January 22nd.
The new center should continue to improve community outreach and live up to the "lifelong learning" motto.
