The name is America on the move, and their goal is to make America healthier by coming up with a program that encourages individuals to exercise and eat better, but not by starting drastic diets or jumping into difficult workouts.
Just a few changes incorporated in daily activity results in an all-around healthier individual.
Why make any changes in the daily routine? It has been shown through countless studies that the eating and physical activity patterns have changed for the worse.
More than 60 percent of adults fail to get the recommended 30 minutes of physical activity and 25 percent are completely inactive. On average, adults in America are gaining 1-2 pounds every year, which is a great concern when it comes to being healthy.
The Salina YMCA aquatics division
is taking part in this movement by encouraging everyone to join the cause.
The daily goal is to eat just 100 fewer calories a day and take 2000 more steps a day, or make it more fun by coming to the YMCA every day and swimming.
The conversion consists of the following: for every minute of freestyle swimming that a female does, it is like walking 189 steps, and 181 for males.
For those who are slightly more practiced and advanced in the water, there are conversions for the breaststroke (women 260, men 254), butterfly (women 283, men 272), backstroke (women 189, men 181) and the sidestroke (women 212, men 199).
By coming into the YMCA, the individual or family interested in participating can get a booklet that has charts to track the amount of daily steps taken and the amount of calories eaten every day.
The best thing about joining the YMCA is that since it is beginning to get cold, everyone can still come and swim in the heated swimming pool and enjoy summer outdoor playtime during the winter!
The program runs until November 30th, but why not start making changes
now and continue on in a healthier lifestyle that benefits overall.
