Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all COMFORT; who COMFORTS us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to COMFORT them which are in any trouble, by the COMFORT where with we ourselves are COMFORTED of God.
At some point in our lives, most of us have tried to comfort someone for a loss in their life; but many times, we just don't know what to say. Notice how in these verses, there is no indication that talking is necessary. The Bible tells us to comfort one another in the same way that God comforts us. That kind of comfort takes a great deal of commitment. Christ said that He will never leave or forsake us; how comforting is it to know that Christ will ALWAYS be there for us?
As you go through your day, you may notice that there will always be someone who needs some form of comfort, and needs you to be there for them, even just to listen.
But too often we get stuck in the general standard conversation rut: "Hey, how are you?"--(do we really care?); "I'm fine, how are you?"--(are we really fine?). What if someone responded like this, "I'm horrible, my GPA is falling around my feet, and (they burst into tears) my best friend just died in a fire!"
As they sob, you don't have a clue of what to say. Good news, you really don't have to say anything, just be there.
We can always be ready to comfort someone in need by making sure when we ask someone how they are doing, that we really care how they are really doing. Let's not get stuck in the general standard conversation rut. Let us really listen to, and be there for the people in our lives, just as God does and is with us.
