"…open your eyes, your heart can tell you no lies…" - performed by 98 degrees.
This phrase has become popular, telling us that if we "listen" to our heart, everything will be fine. But what does the Bible say? It says in Jeremiah 17:9 that "the heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately
wicked: who can know it?" So, if our heart lies to us, and does not necessarily want what's best for us, why do we listen to it?
It is because the heart does not just lie, it deceives us into thinking that the lies are true, and the heart is not just wicked, but it actively seeks after sin. So, how can we overcome the pitfalls of following our heart?
We seek to follow after God's heart. In order to follow God's heart, we must first have a relationship with Him, which means that we must believe in the Lord Jesus. After that relationship begins, we must seek to know the Lord better every day.
King David learned to be a man after God's own heart. When he followed his own heart, he committed adultery and murder, among other sins. To be after God's heart doesn't necessarily mean to be like God's heart, but to be pursuing God's heart.
So, open up those eyes; realize that your heart can, will and does tell you lies; but God will ALWAYS be true.
