After an 11-4 run in the beginning of the second half that kept the Tabor Blue Jays ahead, the Coyote men rallied back in the final minute of the game to close the gap on the Jays.
A shot by Trey Sims with 0.7 seconds left won the game for the 'Yotes. "Coach told me to go into the hole, so I went into the hole strong and made the lay up," Sims said. Sims finished the game with 16 points and 9 rebounds, just one rebound short of a double-double. Meanwhile, the Coyotes had two players who scored double-doubles in the game.
Willie McCarty ended the game with 12 points and 10 rebounds and Mychal Henderson had 16 points and 10 rebounds.
"This is going to be a team thing, and it's going to take a team effort to get back to Branson," Sims stated, referring to last year's success.
The Blue Jays opened up the first half of the game by going on an 8-0 run with 17:14 left in the half, then a 6-0 run later on with 10:40 remaining. The 'Yotes ended the first half on an 11-0 run that began with 4:17 remaining on the clock.
Henderson and Romero Hood each had two points during the run, Sims had three, and Milen Brown scored four. The run nearly secured a Coyotes lead for the end of the first half, but a last-second foul sent the Jays to the foul line, giving them a one-point lead of 34-33 at the end of the half. Hood would end the game with six points, Brown with five points, Tony Boone with four points and Eric Hammond and Clay Dubois with two points each.
With this win, plus a Friends victory over Ottawa and a Bethany win over Sterling, the Coyotes will head into the KCAC tournament next week with the third seed and will play host to the McPherson Bulldogs on Wednesday.
Should the Coyotes win, they would play the winner of the Friends/Tabor game. Should Friends win, the team would play the next round on the road, but should Tabor win, they would host the Blue Jays again at Muir Gym.
"This win is a huge momentum boost (heading into next week), and it's a huge momentum boost coming in playing at home (as well)," says Sims.
Henderson was ejected with 59.4 seconds left in the game.
