Junior Amy Waterman places fifth at track indoor nationals

Amy Waterman received All-American honors on Saturday, March 8th after a fifth place finish in the women's shot put at the NAIA Indoor National Championships in Johnson City, Tenn.
Waterman qualified for the national meet for the third year in a row back on January 25th at the Jayhawk classic held in Lawrence. Her throw of 42 feet, 5 inches exceeded the NAIA's "A" qualifying standard of 41'8". "It's the first time I've been an All-American," Waterman stated. This year, I wasn't as nervous as I was the last two year and that helped out."
Waterman's first throw of 45'9.25" would maintain her fifth-place standing. However, she went on to throw five more times during the flight, but fouled out twice.
Bethany's Jessica Becker went on to win the event with a throw of 50'06". "I feel that I can compete with them again and that I will compete with them again," Waterman said. "I like the competition... because it does give me something to work towards."
Jolene Mick and Sarah Williams were also in action as they competed in the women's 5000 meter run during the March 7 session of the meet.
Mick placed eighth in the first heat and 16th overall with a time of 18 minutes, 37.63 seconds. Williams followed with a 10th place finish in the same heat and placed 20th overall with a time of 18:51.20.
The 'Yotes were set to begin their outdoor season on Thursday in Winfield at the Southwestern Invitational and then take a week off for spring break before competing on March 28th and 29th at Ft. Hays State. "I'm ready, and I am excited for
outdoor season," Waterman said.
