KWU students are always looking for more opportunities to be involved in the community and events such as Project Hero and H.U.N.T. These events provide students with this opportunity.
KWU student Shaun Sumter said, "The experience was both enlightening
and rewarding."
This year was similar to last year because students were given several options as to where they would like to volunteer their time.
Just a few of the locations students had to choose from were The Ashby House, The Stiefel Theater, The Salina Land Institute, The Food Bank, Lakewood School and The Boys and Girls club. Each site required different
types of volunteer jobs.
At the Ashby House, students worked on clearing and cleaning a new building which will be renovated to become a new addition to the properties.
Students there also worked to paint steps and clean up the looks of the current Ashby house.
At the Land Institute students tore down limbs and got a taste of what Kansas Farmland chores entail.
Besides hauling branches and raking
compost, students picked up trash and completed a week-long project in one afternoon.
At a couple different sites students played with children, and, at one location, students even painted a map of the United States on a playground area. It was easy to spot the site leaders, as they wore bright yellow Project Hero shirts.
The day was topped off with a barbecue
at President Phillip Kerstetter's house, featuring an all-you-can-eat taco bar.
